Metabolic Magic
By admin | June 8, 2009
We have all heard it or even said it before: “I can’t lose weight because of my metabolism.” It’s convenient to blame our extra fat on an abstract idea like metabolism, but let’s examine the real importance of metabolism - and better yet, how to get the most “burn” for your buck by recharging your metabolism.
In the most basic sense, metabolism encompasses all of the physical and chemical changes that happen inside the cells of the body. Most often, however, metabolism refers to the manner in which the body gets and uses energy from what we eat, so it really does play an important function in weight loss and gain.
Not everyone has the same metabolism, and our rates actually change during our lives, so someone who blames their metabolism isn’t necessarily making excuses. Age affects metabolism, which will slow about 5% every 10 years after age 40, and by gender, as males have a tendency to burn more calories at rest than females, and by the quantity of muscle mass you have (more muscle generally means a higher metabolic rate). Our genes also influences metabolism, not to mention pregnancy, as well as whether a woman decides to breast-feed.
Regardless of all of the wild cards, the fact is that when your calorie intake exceeds your metabolism, excess energy will get housed in the body as fat. Though some of the factors affecting metabolic rate can’t be helped, thankfully, there are ways to rev up the metabolism you’re born with.
The first tenet is to consume the right foods in the correct amounts. When you miss a meal, your body switches to starvation mode, which slows metabolism to conserve calories, because it doesn’t know when it will get food again. And when the metabolism slows, so does your weight loss.
When you finally do eat after skipping a meal, instead of using the calories in the food you’ve just taken in, your body converts them to body fat to store for the next “fast.” To keep your metabolism efficient, eat 4 - 6 smaller meals during the day and try to eat close to the same times every day. Most importantly, never skip a meal.
You can also step up your metabolic rate with exercise, including both aerobic routines and weight lifting. Aerobic activities, such as biking, dancing and running, burn more calories in the short term, while weight lifting will create more muscle, which improves metabolism and burns more calories in the long term - even when you’re sitting still, muscle needs more calories to function than fat.
In fact, each pound of muscle burns 35 calories a day, while every pound of fat burns just 2 calories per day. Despite this, you may be surprised that the more weight you posses, the faster your metabolism is likely to run. Simply put, the extra weight forces your body work more to maintain its processes.
This is partially why it’s almost always easiest to lose weight when you begin dieting, and becomes more difficult as you continue because, when you are significantly overweight, your metabolism is already at an elevated rate, so that even a slight reduction in calories will lead to an immediate weight loss.
But what happens after that immediate loss, when a plateau occurs and motivation seems to go by the “weigh” side? Persistent cravings and compulsions can suddenly return, and when they do, do not neglect a valuable resource

Take Off Pounds Permanently Based On Lifestyle Modifications
By admin | June 7, 2009
Do you need to get rid of those surplus pounds of yours and improve your health? Dieting combined with exercise may be the correct choice for you. But the stress in most of today’s diets is placed on reducing carbs and fat intake, by choosing sub-optimal sources of protein, which is a primary nutrient.
The Greenwich Diet can be the ideal key. It’s a meal plan fashioned to change your metabolism so you feel less hunger for all the foods that make you get fat. As your metabolism increases, your body will become more effective at burning fat so you will begin to lose those unnecessary pounds more rapidly.
You should add to your protein intake, which elevates the basic metabolism by nearly 25%. This can be achieved by eating fish, whey protein, egg whites or whole eggs, skim milk, lean steak, and chicken breast. Don’t eat foods that are high in carbs like pasta and rice. Eat only fibrous complex carbs: Broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, celery, cucumber, and onions. Additionally, you should augment your diet with two to three servings of whey protein, which is a by-product of cheese manufacturing. It acts as an energy source for someone who is dieting and exercising.
Even fruits are not advisable in excessive amounts on this diet. Because something is natural, it does not mean that it is good for you. Fruits are high in sugar, which can cause diabetes and weight gain. But vegetables high in fiber such as salad vegetables, spinach and carrots are good for you. The golden health rule - drinking water, may help you in your efforts to reduce weight. People of all ages need to drink plenty of water since it is an essential nutrient. Most often, even health conscious people ignore the need to drink adequate amounts of water.
As in any acceptable weight control program, exercise is also coupeled with the Greenwich Diet. This program is actually more of a healthy way of living than it is a diet. When you follow this program you will know what to eat and what to avoid, thus increasing your metabolism. The main factor in a successful weight loss plan is not just the diet itself, but actually FOLLOWING THE DIET! All diets do work, but very few people are able to adhere to any diet, even just for a relatively short period of time. That’s because the major problem faced by someone who needs to lose weight is that they cannot curb their appetite and eating habits.
Appetite can be suppressed by taking appetite suppressant pills. But pills can be harmful, and all of them have negative side effects. And also, once you discontinue taking the pills, you’ll pile the weight back on because you haven’t dealt with your compulsions at their source. So to take off weight, you’ll have to find a way to follow the diet. To achieve a lasting weight loss, you need to know how to condition your mind to enjoy sticking to your plan.
In 1958, the AMA authorized hypnosis as an effective method for dealing with stress related symptoms like excessive eating. You might conceive that hypnotherapy is just a trick done in a stage show in which a hypnotist is demonstrating his or her powers before the spectators. But actually hypnosis can provide the motivation to keep you moving in the direction of your weight loss goals. And it can enable you to break many of the barriers that get in the way of your weight loss.
Hypnotherapy is the perfect tool for re-educating your unconscious - the part that creates cravings and impulses. Self hypnosis CDs can give you back the inner strength to make the proper choices about what you eat.
Although hypnosis is at times referred to as a method of treatment, it can be regarded as a facilitator of a number of different treatment methods for weight loss. The hypnotic state is defined by heightened concentration, suggestibility, and relaxation. Lasting weight loss occurs with a change in lifestyle and not just a change in diet. Hypnosis for weight loss can help you lose weight more quickly and easily than you ever imagined accomplishable. Self-hypnosis for weight loss is not just about solving problems and changing habits. You can also develop new, more useful behaviors, such as increased concentration, greater self-confidence or stronger motivation.
One-way to obtain hypnotherapy weight loss help is to go to a professional hypnotist, which usually costs around $200.00 to $300.00 for a single hour. A popular substitute is to order a self hypnosis weight loss from a reputable, certified hypnotherapist. A good pre-recorded program will start out with a session that explains the misconceptions about hypnotism for weight loss, and how it actually works. Since everyone is different, it will then give several different self-hypnosis weight loss sessions, and each session will use a variety of different hypnotic techniques. Hypnotherapy weight management programs are available for as little as 25 to 30 dollars. Since CDs are more inexpensive, they can be a workable substitute to visiting a hypnotist.
Conclusion: All diets work, if you are able to adhere to them. Some diets, like the Greenwich Diet proposed by Dr. Carlon M. Colker, MD, are better than others in providing the nutrients necessary for an increased metabolism. The Greenwich Diet can be comfortable to stick with because it is more of a lifestyle than a diet. Hypnosis for weight loss can annihilate your compulsions and cravings, and give the motivation you need to keep moving in the direction of your weight loss goals. It can also help you attain your goals quickly and safely.

Stress And Anxiety - Modern Techniques To Overcome Them So You Can Relax
By admin | June 6, 2009
Now more than ever, research is proving the fundamental role of stress in causing and aggravating various psychological and physical afflictions. An article in a 1983 issue of Time Magazine called stress “The Epidemic of the Eighties.” It also said that stress is a considerable health problem. And one has to recognize that the world has become even more complicated and stressful over the last two decades since that article was published.
Several surveys show that most adults feel that they are subject to a lot of stress. Researchers in the field estimate that between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to primary care doctors are for stress related problems.
Most adults claim their stress is for the most part due to their job. And stress levels have also increased in children as well as the elderly population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to drug and alcohol abuse; the dissolution of family and religious values and ties; increased crime rates; threats to personal security; as well as social isolation and loneliness.
Stress can be responsible for conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. This is due to the increased sympathetic nervous system activity as well as a flood of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress is co-morbid with weakened immune system resistance. Stress can cause anxiety, depression, and its varied effects on one’s organs.
The following definition for “stress” can be found in the American Heritage Dictionary: “To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain”
“Tension” is defined as follows: “Mental, emotional, or nervous strain”
The word “anxiety” is defined as follows: “A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties”
And it defines “depression” as follows: “The condition of feeling sad or despondent”
The following definition is given for “clinical depression”: “A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.”
What we can be sure of is that our thoughts are the chief source of our experience of stress, anxiety and depression. Put differently, what we think about, and our attitudes and the way we view our experiences strongly influence our feelings. So if we can learn how to modify our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, then we can eliminate our stress, anxiety, and depression and attain a more positive state of being.
People have always tried methods for eliminating stress. With the pharmaceutical industry there seems to be a drug for everything. And to that end the industry has developed a wide line of sedatives from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to use drugs for relief, please be sure to read the fine print and learn about the side effects, which usually include addiction and dependency. Unfortunately, these types of drugs try to cure the symptoms, instead of the cause. So as soon as one stops taking them, the symptoms can come back.
A smarter way of eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to treat its actual cause, which as I wrote previously, is generally our thought processes. There is the good news. The very essence of hypnosis is relaxation. The AMA recognized hypnosis in 1958 as an effective way to cure stress and stress related symptoms. But unlike drugs, there are definitely no undesirable side effects.
When you enter hypnosis, you are in the Alpha level of consciousness. It’s the daydream like temporary psychological state which we feel as we are about to fall asleep in the evening. And we feel it once again as we awaken in the morning. There are lots of different ways we can guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD’s.
Once in a hypnotic state, we are able to interact with our unconscious mind, which is the seat of our feelings. And one can more easily accept new points of view and ideas which can help us to reduce anxiety, or even prevent anxiety from occurring in the first place.
NLP, which is a recently developed sort of hypnosis, offers different excellent techniques for eliminating stress. Perhaps the most effective technique is called the “swish” pattern - or the “flash” pattern. After using this technique, your unconscious will automatically use bad, stress producing mental images, to generate relaxing mental images. Otherwise stated, what commonly makes you feel stress will automatically trigger relaxation!
TO SUM THINGS UP Our thoughts can cause depression, anxiety and tension. So if we change our attitude and the way we resent our situation and what we’ve experienced, we can reduce these feelings at the root. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that allow us to change our attitude and point of view to rapidly reduce the root cause of these negative feelings.
