Drug companies in particular have capitalized on and created gigantic fortunes because of the elusive search for the &#8220;Magic Pill&#8221; that will fix everything. As it turns out, there is a secret formula for success, and it begins in the human mind.</p>
<p>One of the rules of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is that &#8220;there is a positive intention behind all behaviors.&#8221; And based on that rule, when it comes to getting rid of negative behaviors, there is an equation that we must keep in mind. I&#8217;ll let you in on the secret formula in a minute. But first, I have a riddle for you to solve. </p>
<p>Riddle: A preacher made his child drink lye, which burned out the child&#8217;s voice box. What was the positive intention behind this action? </p>
<p>If you are like 99.9% of the clients who have visited my office since 1978, you&#8217;ll say something like: &#8220;There&#8217;s no positive intention behind that behavior.&#8221; But you would be completely incorrect. To answer this riddle, you must separate the behavior from the positive intention of the behavior. </p>
<p>The minister&#8217;s child was cursing. And the minister believes that if his child curses, his soul will be condemned to Hell. So the answer is that the minister was burning out his child&#8217;s vocal cords so that he couldn&#8217;t curse. By doing so, he was saving his child&#8217;s soul from being damned to Hell. </p>
<p>The secret equation for personal change uses <a href="http://www.neuro-vision.us/Articles/The-Secret-Formula-For-Successful-Change.htm?a_aid=6384706d">NLP</a> and works as follows: </p>
<p>We should always respect the positive intention that motivates every behavior. If we have an impulse to employ a behavior that we don&#8217;t like, we can quickly get rid of the impulse to use that behavior. All we need to do is to find a different behavior and substitute it in its place. To be successful, the new action must be as accessible and effective at accomplishing the same secondary gain, but be more consciously acceptable to you. This is called a REFRAME. </p>
<p>When clients come into my office, the first thing I do is to take a thorough case history. Let&#8217;s say that they come in and ask me to help them <a href="http://www.neuro-vision.us/AppetiteControl2.html?a_aid=6384706d"> lose weight</a>. Conventional wisdom tells us that the two main reasons that people eat excessively are: (1) to reduce stress; (2) because eating can be a conditioned response. Case in point, if a person eats while they are watching TV, they will develop a conditioned response, and thereafter, every time they sit down to watch TV, they&#8217;ll get cravings and an urge to eat. </p>
<p>However, the above answer only takes into consideration the possible secondary gain received from the behavior of eating. What if they also have another behavior that is involved in the equation? Case in point: What if being chubby is also a behavior for this person? I can hear your mind churning right now as you think, &#8220;Being heavy isn&#8217;t a behavior, what are you talking about?&#8221; </p>
<p>Sorry but you could be 100% incorrect. Here is a classic textbook example that will illustrate the fact that being heavy can be a behavior. It can be a behavior because it can accomplish positive outcomes. </p>
<p>Example: A woman is deeply in love. Her partner breaks up with her, and breaks her heart. Her unconscious wants to protect her emotionally and stop her from ever having her heart broken again. So it motivates her to get heavy to keep her out of relationships. Because if she isn&#8217;t in a relationship she won&#8217;t get her heart broken again. </p>
<p>Everyone is totally different. And sometimes there are hidden elements at work that cause uncontrollable behaviors. These are elements that are different for each person.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another case: A woman comes into my office complaining of an uncontrollable urge to overeat at mealtime. During my case history, the woman explains to me how she has never been able to please her dad. </p>
<p>During an age regression, we learned that one of her early memories was of having a meal with her family. And dad was insisting in a very loud voice that she clean her plate, even though she was bursting at the seams. So she finished the food left on her plate because of fear, and her dad praised her for finishing all of the food. It was one of the only times in her life that she could recall her father telling her that she had made him happy. </p>
<p>Shoot forward to the present. Dad&#8217;s been dead for many years, but the unconscious program he installed is still operational. She still has an urge to finish everything on her plate, even if she is feeling stuffed to the gills, because by cleaning the plate, in her subconscious mind she is getting dad&#8217;s approval, and eliminating her own fear!</p>
<p>So if you are having a problem making personal changes, please remember that there is a positive intention that causes all behaviors. And the formula for success is to alternate another behavior that will accomplish the same secondary gain, but in a way that is more consciously satisfactory to you, as an individual. It significantly differs from hunger, because you only feel hungry if your body does not have enough reserves to sustain itself and hence signals its need for nourishment.</p>
<p> Appetite is often confused with hunger, but they are 2 different things with different factors. Hunger is a physical signal that your body is in need of nourishment and it would be unhealthy if you tried to fight it. Appetite, though, is mainly triggered by psychological factors and does not respond to any physical need.</p>
<p> Indeed, stimulation of the mouth is a source of comfort and pleasure, which is why some people enjoy chewing gum for instance. It is the same reason that might explain why people enjoy having a cigarette in their mouths, or why they can feel hungry without actually needing to eat.</p>
<p> This comfort and pleasure may be sought after unconsciously by the mind when experiencing a stressful situation, which is why stress and anxiety can often create the urge to eat. Our mind also frequently unconsciously creates associations between two actions, so that every time you perform any of these actions your brain creates the urge to perform the other simultaneously. Thus you can feel the urge to eat when around friends, sitting at a table or when watching television. Weight gain is also very often a side effect of many drugs.</p>
<p> Even a little appetite problem can be seriously disabling and a possible danger for your health. Not only can it make you more and more anxious about your physical appearance, but it may also threaten your health on the long term. Excessive appetite can be responsible for obesity, respiratory difficulties, musculoskeletal problems, high blood pressure, and cholesterol and potentially lethal diseases like diabetes, cancer and gallbladder disease.</p>

<p> In the most basic sense, metabolism encompasses all of the physical and chemical changes that happen inside the cells of the body. Most often, however, metabolism refers to the manner in which the body gets and uses energy from what we eat, so it really does play an important function in weight loss and gain. </p>
<p> Not everyone has the same metabolism, and our rates actually change during our lives, so someone who blames their metabolism isn&#8217;t necessarily making excuses. Age affects metabolism, which will slow about 5% every 10 years after age 40, and by gender, as males have a tendency to burn more calories at rest than females, and by the quantity of muscle mass you have (more muscle generally means a higher metabolic rate). Our genes also influences metabolism, not to mention pregnancy, as well as whether a woman decides to breast-feed. </p>
<p> Regardless of all of the wild cards, the fact is that when your calorie intake exceeds your metabolism, excess energy will get housed in the body as fat. Though some of the factors affecting metabolic rate can&#8217;t be helped, thankfully, there are ways to rev up the metabolism you&#8217;re born with.</p>
<p> The first tenet is to consume the right foods in the correct amounts. When you miss a meal, your body switches to starvation mode, which slows metabolism to conserve calories, because it doesn&#8217;t know when it will get food again. And when the metabolism slows, so does your weight loss. </p>
<p> When you finally do eat after skipping a meal, instead of using the calories in the food you&#8217;ve just taken in, your body converts them to body fat to store for the next &#8220;fast.&#8221; To keep your metabolism efficient, eat 4 - 6 smaller meals during the day and try to eat close to the same times every day. Most importantly, never skip a meal.</p>
<p> You can also step up your metabolic rate with exercise, including both aerobic routines and weight lifting. Aerobic activities, such as biking, dancing and running, burn more calories in the short term, while weight lifting will create more muscle, which improves metabolism and burns more calories in the long term - even when you&#8217;re sitting still, muscle needs more calories to function than fat. </p>
<p> In fact, each pound of muscle burns 35 calories a day, while every pound of fat burns just 2 calories per day. Despite this, you may be surprised that the more weight you posses, the faster your metabolism is likely to run. Simply put, the extra weight forces your body work more to maintain its processes. </p>
<p> This is partially why it&#8217;s almost always easiest to lose weight when you begin dieting, and becomes more difficult as you continue because, when you are significantly overweight, your metabolism is already at an elevated rate, so that even a slight reduction in calories will lead to an immediate weight loss.</p>
<p> But what happens after that immediate loss, when a plateau occurs and motivation seems to go by the &#8220;weigh&#8221; side? Persistent cravings and compulsions can suddenly return, and when they do, do not neglect a valuable resource</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Now more than ever, research is proving the fundamental role of stress in causing and aggravating various psychological and physical afflictions. An article in a 1983 issue of Time Magazine called stress &#8220;The Epidemic of the Eighties.&#8221; It also said that stress is a considerable health problem. And one has to recognize that the world has become even more complicated and stressful over the last two decades since that article was published.</p>
<p>Several surveys show that most adults feel that they are subject to a lot of stress. Researchers in the field estimate that between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to primary care doctors are for stress related problems.</p>
<p>Most adults claim their stress is for the most part due to their job. And stress levels have also increased in children as well as the elderly population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to drug and alcohol abuse; the dissolution of family and religious values and ties; increased crime rates; threats to personal security; as well as social isolation and loneliness.</p>
<p>Stress can be responsible for conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. This is due to the increased sympathetic nervous system activity as well as a flood of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress is co-morbid with weakened immune system resistance. Stress can cause anxiety, depression, and its varied effects on one&#8217;s organs.</p>
<p>The following definition for &#8220;stress&#8221; can be found in the American Heritage Dictionary: &#8220;To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Tension&#8221; is defined as follows: &#8220;Mental, emotional, or nervous strain&#8221;</p>
<p>The word &#8220;anxiety&#8221; is defined as follows: &#8220;A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties&#8221;</p>
<p>And it defines &#8220;depression&#8221; as follows: &#8220;The condition of feeling sad or despondent&#8221;</p>
<p>The following definition is given for &#8220;clinical depression&#8221;: &#8220;A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, <a href="http://www.neuro-vision.us/Articles/how-to-overcome-insomnia-in-8-quick-steps.htm?a_aid=6384706d">insomnia</a>, <a href="http://www.neuro-vision.us/Articles/medical-research-and-weight-loss-hypnosis-for-success.html?a_aid=6384706d">loss of appetite</a>, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.&#8221;</p>
<p>What we can be sure of is that our thoughts are the chief source of our experience of stress, anxiety and depression. Put differently, what we think about, and our attitudes and the way we view our experiences strongly influence our feelings. So if we can learn how to modify our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, then we can eliminate our stress, anxiety, and depression and attain a more positive state of being.</p>
<p>People have always tried methods for <a href="http://www.neuro-vision.us/Articles/hypnosis_anxiety_stress_management.html?a_aid=6384706d">eliminating stress</a>. With the pharmaceutical industry there seems to be a drug for everything. And to that end the industry has developed a wide line of sedatives from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to use drugs for relief, please be sure to read the fine print and learn about the side effects, which usually include addiction and dependency. Unfortunately, these types of drugs try to cure the symptoms, instead of the cause. So as soon as one stops taking them, the symptoms can come back.</p>
<p>A smarter way of eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to treat its actual cause, which as I wrote previously, is generally our thought processes. There is the good news. The very essence of hypnosis is relaxation. The AMA recognized hypnosis in 1958 as an effective way to cure stress and stress related symptoms. But unlike drugs, there are definitely no undesirable side effects.</p>
<p>When you enter hypnosis, you are in the Alpha level of consciousness. It&#8217;s the daydream like temporary psychological state which we feel as we are about to fall asleep in the evening. And we feel it once again as we awaken in the morning. There are lots of different ways we can guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Once in a hypnotic state, we are able to interact with our unconscious mind, which is the seat of our feelings. And one can more easily accept new points of view and ideas which can help us to reduce anxiety, or even prevent anxiety from occurring in the first place.</p>
<p>NLP, which is a recently developed sort of hypnosis, offers different excellent techniques for eliminating stress. Perhaps the most effective technique is called the &#8220;swish&#8221; pattern - or the &#8220;flash&#8221; pattern. After using this technique, your unconscious will automatically use bad, stress producing mental images, to generate relaxing mental images. Otherwise stated, what commonly makes you feel stress will automatically trigger relaxation!</p>
<p>TO SUM THINGS UP Our thoughts can cause depression, anxiety and tension. So if we change our attitude and the way we resent our situation and what we&#8217;ve experienced, we can reduce these feelings at the root. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that allow us to change our attitude and point of view to rapidly reduce the root cause of these negative feelings.</p>
